Yerba Maté (Ilex paraguariensis) is a South American tree that is cultivated to produce a green leaf tea.  Yerba Maté leaves naturally contain caffeine (approximately 1.68%).  However, as the caffeine is part of a complex called mateine, Yerba Maté provides a more sustained effect when compared to tea or coffee.  Rio Amazon Yerba Maté Powder is organic and unsmoked.

Pure, powdered Organic Yerba Maté (Ilex paraguariensis) leaves.  Product Origin: South America

CAUTION: High caffeine content. Not recommended for children or pregnant or breast-feeding women (56-210mg caffeine per 100ml drink, depending on preparation method). As per usage instructions, ‘thin’ mixture has 42mg caffeine per cup ‘thick’ mixture has 84mg caffeine per cup.

For traditional preparation, powder can be prepared ‘thick’ or ‘thin’ depending on preference.  For a thin mixture, whisk half a teaspoon (2.5g) with 75ml of hot water or milk. For a thick mixture, whisk a heaped teaspoon (5g) with 40ml of hot water or milk. Whisk until frothy.  Yerba Maté tea tastes better when made at just off the boil (60-65°C) and can be made with more water if desired.
