Say goodbye to sugar, with Stevia
Whilst sugar may taste sweet, eating too much can unfortunately leave you with some unsavoury health conditions. Fortunately, there’s an alternative called Stevia, that can be used as a substitute. Let us explain the benefits and why you should consider making the switch...
Why is sugar bad for your health?
Firstly, let’s look at what sugar is. Sugar is a carbohydrate, that’s used by the body for energy. When your blood sugar levels elevate, your pancreas releases insulin to balance out levels, allowing the sugar to be used for energy, or stored for future use.
Eating too much sugar can lead to weight gain, which can cause the body to become less sensitive to insulin and cause type 2 diabetes. Being overweight can also contribute towards heart disease and other medical problems.
Is all sugar bad?
The short answer is no.
Foods contain two types of sugar; naturally-occurring and added. Sugar is found naturally in foods like milk (lactose) and fruits (fructose), and whilst you still need to control your intake, it’s only bad for you in excessive amounts.
Added sugar is found in processed foods like cakes, fizzy pop and ready meals. It’s the added stuff that causes the major problems, as unwittingly, we can consume our daily recommended intake in a single can of drink.
What’s Stevia, and why is it better than sugar?
Stevia is an extract from the leaves of a tropical plant called Stevia Rebaudiana. It has 300 times the sweetness of sugar and doesn’t cause the release of insulin, meaning it’s safe for diabetics and ideal for those who want to lose weight or reduce their sugar intake.
How can Stevia be used?
Stevia drops, like the ones from Nutramedix, can be used in drinks such as tea and coffee or as a sugar substitute in cooking. As a guide, we recommend adding three or more drops as desired to food and beverages.
