Milk, no sugar or plastic please
As a nation, we LOVE tea. But did you know that many tea bags contain plastic? Despite environmental issues surrounding how much waste we produce, many large tea brands and even some organic brands use plastic components to seal their tea bags, meaning they’re not biodegradable.
According to Natural Products Global, an estimated 165 million tea bags are used every single day, and as a result, a large amount of plastic waste ends up in compost heaps or landfill. Whilst campaigners are battling for changes in the composition of tea bags, there’s something each of us can do right now to help the problem.
When you pick out your perfect cuppa, always check to see what the tea bags are made from, or opt for loose teas instead! Our Rio Amazon range unbleached tea bags are made from abaca (which comes from a species of banana) and cellulose taken from sustainably sourced plant fibres. This way, you can enjoy your tea knowing it’s all natural, not causing the planet harm and definitely not full of plastic!
Following a string of major changes surrounding plastic pollutants, including a ban on microbeads and a charge on disposable coffee cups, we’re hopeful that it’s only a matter of time before all tea bags become eco-friendly.
